Pianofuzz

Pianofuzz was a brazilian design studio founded in 2009. We see in design a tool to make a historical dialogue with society and, thus, produce, think and understand the role of man, taking into account his cultural production among other aspects.

What is the story of Pianofuzz ? The studio was founded in 2009. We met working in an advertising agency. The lack of processes and methodology within the company made us think of a working model that could meet our expectations. This is how the studio was born, both from a personal dissatisfaction and the desire to create a space where we can exchange our processes and ideas.

How would you describe the current mood of brazilian graphic design ? We have a design vision strongly related to culture and history. Concepts such as hybridity, antagonism and mix of cultures are part of Brazilian culture. We would like to mention here some aesthetic movements of the mid-twentieth century as the Cinema Novo, Tropicália and Neoconcretism, as concrete realizations of these concepts in the Brazilian cultural production. In our view, these concepts and many others which helped build what is our culture today, still affect the production of a certain kind of design in Brazil, and it pleases us a lot. We see a growing production and professionalization of design in Brazil. We have studios considering design in the postmodern scope, combining illustration and digital media without fear and without purism. But we would also like to point out some problems and difficulties of the current situation. Here in Brazil, the profession of designer is still not regulated, which means we have no regulatory body that supports us and acts for the profession. Brazil needs a design culture. A culture where the design is seen objectively as something we truly need.

What are the main characteristics of a good designer from your point of view ? Understanding the essential needs of the project and therefore asking the right question. Knowing how to consider a project in its entirety. Understanding the creative process and what needs to be done to complete it. Feeling free and getting rid of prejudice and bonds.

What are you currently interested in ? How is it feeding into your work ? The cultural and historical question weighs heavily in how we consider our work and our inspiration - this is the foundation of our creative power and our studio aesthetics. Therefore, any field such as cinema, literature, philosophy, fine arts and design itself, can be sources of inspiration. As well as any element that highlights human thought and communication. This is part of our essence. Interview conducted in April 2016 ©ktlg
