Serbia
What is the story of your studio ? The studio is very young, only three years old. After few years of working in several brand agencies, I decided to open my own space to gain freedom in my daily practice, but also to have more responsibilities.
Do you feel we can define a Serbian graphic design these days ? I am not sure I am the person best placed to talk about it precisely, but I don't have the feeling that we can truly define a Serbian design style. For me it is more a sum of different individual identities that makes the whole scene. I think the power of Internet have had the biggest impact on what became graphic design these days, but I hope it will change… Belgrade as a city is very inspiring, its recent history was built by an interlacing of specific aesthetics from European and Oriental cultures.
What kind of design projects interest you ? The studio is mainly working on cultural and institutional projects, with a large range of skills such as brand identity, publishing, photography, type design or web design. In Serbia there are not big investments in cultural institutions or even in culture in general, so it is almost impossible to work only for that area. One of the last interesting project I worked on was the visual identity for FABelgrade 2016, the first conference in Serbia and its region dedicated to the promotion of digital fabrication and fab lab concept, through their applications in various fields. And a second one would be my collaboration with young enthusiasts from Niš, for the international architecture film festival Novi Fokus Niš. For me it will remain a significant project, because it decentralizes one of the culture segments in Serbia.
How would you see your studio in five years ? It would be not realistic to look that far from now… But the idea is above all to remain an independent studio, without an excessive need for expansion. I just want to extend its focus on the international market. Interview conducted in November 2015 & May 2016 ©ktlg
